No. 5 Stanford 42, No. 23 Arizona State 28: Kevin Hogan threw two touchdowns to Ty Montgomery, while Tyler Gaffney rushed for a pair of scores as the Cardinal erupted in the opening 30 minutes and then survived a furious rally by the visiting Sun Devils in the Pac-12 opener for both teams.

The Cardinal (3-0, 1-0 Pac-12) stormed to a 29-0 lead at halftime and withstood some heavy second-half resistance from the Sun Devils in extending their win streak to 10 straight games. Arizona State (2-1, 1-1) scored 21 straight points in the fourth quarter – all on touchdown passes by Taylor Kelly – but still saw its run of five straight victories come to an end.

Hogan completed 11-of-17 passes for 151 yards, while Montgomery finished with four catches for 62 yards. Gaffney paced the Cardinal rushing attack with 87 yards on 18 carries, including a 16-yard score that put Stanford up 39-7 with 37 seconds to play in the third quarter.

Marion Grice, who rushed for four touchdowns in last week’s wild victory over Wisconsin, got Arizona State on the board with a short TD run early in the third quarter. Kelly (30-of-55, 367 yards) connected with Grice on a 6-yard scoring strike with 6:18 remaining in the fourth to make it 39-28, but Stanford recovered the ensuing onside kick and drove down the field on a clock-killing drive capped by Jordan Williamson’s 24-yard field goal.

Hogan initially hooked up with Montgomery on a 17-yard TD in a first quarter that ended with Stanford ahead 13-0. The second quarter was highlighted by Hogan’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Montgomery and a blocked punt – one of two on the day for the Cardinal – that resulted in a safety in the final seconds of the half.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Cardinal have won 11 straight home games and their 11-game overall winning streak is the second best in the nation, behind only Ohio State (16). … Stanford S Ed Reynolds was ejected in the fourth quarter after “targeting” Kelly on a helmet-to-helmet hit. … Arizona State WR Jaelen Strong posted a game-high 12 receptions for 168 yards, including one of the Sun Devils’ fourth-quarter scores.
