Gardner was 21-for-33 for 294 yards and four scores and rushed for a game-high 82 yards and a touchdown as Michigan (2-0) earned its 400th victory at Michigan Stadium and improved to 16-0 at home under coach Brady Hoke. Gardner connected with Gallon again for a 13-yard score and a 34-20 lead with 1:54 left in the third quarter, but he made a careless play early in the fourth, trying to throw the ball away to avoid a sack in the end zone but instead lobbing to a diving Stephon Tuitt for a touchdown that pulled Notre Dame within 34-27.

Gardner capped a 10-play, 75-yard drive with a 4-yard strike to Drew Dileo to make it 41-30 with 4:18 left, and Countess picked off Rees in the end zone to seal it. Gallon hauled in eight passes for a career-high 184 yards with touchdown receptions of 61, 12 and 13 yards.
