No. 10 Baylor 45, Southern Methodist 0: Senior quarterback Bryce Petty went 13-of-23 for 161 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another before leaving the game with a back bruise, but the host Bears had no problem in their season opener.

Jay Lee had eight catches for 83 yards and a late touchdown for Baylor, Davion Hall had seven catches for 86 yards and Levi Norwood had four catches for 26 yards to extend his 29-game reception streak. Shock Linwood added 89 yards and a touchdown on the ground, and the Bears recorded eight sacks - one shy of the school record.

Southern Methodist quarterbacks Neal Burcham (15-of-26 for 59 yards), Matt Davis (3-of-6 for 12) and Kolney Cassel (3-of-8 for 20) recorded a combined minus-63 rushing yards. Baylor outgained the Mustangs 574-67 while recording its first shutout of a FBS opponent since 1995.

Linwood's 4-yard touchdown run for a 10-0 lead midway through the first quarter came two plays after Aiavion Edwards' 11-yard fumble return and Norwood's 45-yard punt return set up a short touchdown pass to tight end Tre'Von Armstead four minutes later. Petty hit KD Cannon for a 46-yard score three plays after a SMU turnover on downs and scored on a 5-yard run early in the second quarter three plays after Xavien Howard's interception in SMU territory.

Backup Seth Russell hit Lee for a 12-yard score late in the third quarter and Silas Nacita capped the Bears' scoring with a 1-yard run with five minutes left. Russell finished 13-of-23 for 124 yards with one interception, playing all but one series in the second half.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Petty, who sat out the second half with a lower back bruise, broke Robert Griffin III's school record by throwing a touchdown in 14 straight games. ... Griffin was on hand when Baylor unveiled a bronze statue of the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner outside the school's new $266 million McLane Stadium before Sunday's game. ... After leading the FBS in touchdown drives of one minute or less (29) and scoring drives of three plays or fewer (21), Baylor had three and four, respectively, in the opener.
