John White IV’s 8-yard touchdown run in overtime lifted Utah to a 30-27 win over Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl.

The Utes (8-5) improved to 10-1 in their last 11 bowls, while the Jackets (8-5) lost their seventh straight bowl.

Justin Moore’s 34-yard field goal had given Tech a 27-24 lead in overtime, then White burst through the middle on 3rd-and-goal.

Utah overcame a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit, tying the game when DeVonte Christopher beat man coverage for a 28-yard touchdown catch with 1:32 left. Tech’s

David Scully missed a 48-yard field goal as time expired, sending the game to overtime.

Senior fullback Preston Lyons had a career day for the Jackets. Playing for injured starter David Sims, Lyons ran for 139 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.

Trailing 10-7 at halftime, the Jackets erupted for 17 third-quarter points. Tevin Washington’s 31-yard strike to Stephen Hill put Tech ahead 17-10, and Quayshawn Nealy’s 76-yard interception return for a score pushed the lead to two touchdowns.

Ranked last in the Pac-12 in passing, the Utes came out throwing. Jon Hays hit 3 of 5 passes for 67 yards on their opening drive, capping it with a 1-yard TD toss to Shawn Asiata.

The Jackets played without several key players due to injuries and suspensions, and lost leading tackler Julian Burnett to a neck injury in the first half.
