Jake Wieclaw kicked a 36-yard field goal as time expired and Miami became bowl eligible with an ugly 6-3 victory over South Florida on Saturday.

Offense was a mere rumor in a game that featured 17 punts. The Hurricanes (6-4) had managed just 50 yards in the second half before Jacory Harris led a 14-play, 61-yard drive that chewed up more than six minutes.

Miami redeemed itself after losing 23-20 in overtime to the Bulls last season, which proved to be the final game of the Randy Shannon era.

While the win makes the Hurricanes bowl eligible in Al Golden's first season, they may not get to experience postseason play. The season began with news of the infamous Nevin Shapiro scandal in which 72 former and current Miami players allegedly received illegal benefits from the convicted felon. School official could decide on a self-imposed bowl ban as punishment.

South Florida (5-5), meanwhile, was also trying to become bowl eligible, but it wasted a spectacular defensive effort. The Bulls racked up six sacks and held Miami star tailback Lamar Miller to just 51 yards on 20 carries.

South Florida also lost quarterback B.J. Daniels to a sprained shoulder midway through the third quarter. In place of Daniels, Bobby Eveld finished 5 of 9 for 36 yards.

The Bulls wore special Under Armour uniforms and helmets that were laced with stars and stripes on Military Appreciation Day. The game-worn uniforms will be auctioned off on behalf of the Wounded Warrior Project – a non-profit organization designed to help veterans injured in combat.
