Baylor’s Robert Griffin III couldn’t have picked a worse time to throw his first interception of the season.

Anthony Cantele kicked a 31-yard field goal with 3:10 left as Kansas State escaped with a wild 36-35 victory over the 16th-ranked Bears on Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

With Baylor leading 35-33 late in the fourth quarter, Griffin III had a pass intercepted by Arthur Brown in Bears territory. The Wildcats took over at Baylor’s 15-yard line and ran three rushing plays before settling for the go-ahead field goal.

The Bears (3-1, 0-1 Big 12), with a chance to win late, drove eight yards but turned the ball over on downs when Griffin III’s fourth-down pass was batted down at the line.

The win helped Kansas State improve to 4-0 for the second straight year as the home team won for the fifth straight time in the series. Baylor, which was trying to start a season 4-0 for the first time since 1991, won last year’s meeting, 47-42.

Griffin III tied a career-high with five touchdown passes in the loss and Kendall Wright had a career-high nine catches for 201 receiving yards. Griffin III’s interception was his first in 163 attempts.

Baylor took a 35-26 lead late in the third quarter on Wright’s 35-yard touchdown reception. But the Wildcats (4-0, 1-0 Big 12), who earned a 28-24 come-from-behind victory last week at Miami, responded on Collin Klein’s 1-yard rushing touchdown with 5:43 left.

Klein finished with 146 passing yards and two touchdowns and ran for 113 yards and a touchdown for the Wildcats, who defeated a top 25 opponent for just the third time in its last 18 tries.
