Fifth-year senior Marshall Lobbestael filled in admirably for injured starting quarterback Jeff Tuel, throwing for 361 yards and five touchdowns as host Washington State defeated UNLV 59-7 Saturday in Pullman, Wash.

Lobbestael had four of his five touchdown passes in the first half as the Cougars built a 35-0 lead.

Tuel, the team’s standout junior, broke his collarbone in last week’s season-opening win over Idaho State. He’s expected to miss the next six to eight weeks, but in the interim, Washington State might have found an adequate replacement.

Lobbestael led the Cougars on scoring drives of 79, 74, 81, 80 and 52 yards in the first half and connected on 16 of his first 18 passing attempts.

He finished 24-of-32 as 11 different receivers caught passes for the Cougars, who at 2-0 matched their win total from all of last season. The Cougars went 2-10 and finished dead last in the Pac-12 in 2010.

With the win, Washington State improved to 5-0 all-time against UNLV, which gave up more than 40 points for the 10th time in its last 15 games.

The Rebels (0-2), who lost 51-17 at No. 9 Wisconsin in the season opener, are 2-11 all-time against BCS conference opponents.

Six different receivers caught touchdowns for the Cougars, including Jared Karstetter, who finished with six catches for 66 yards and a pair of scores.

Marquess Wilson had a game-high five catches for 102 yards and a touchdown for the Cougars, who outgained the Rebels, 664-217.

UNLV scored its only touchdown with 5:29 left on Alex Gauper’s 95-yard kickoff return.
