No. 15 Ohio State was shorthanded once again and barely managed to pull out a 27-22 victory over in-state foe Toledo on Saturday.

Carlos Hyde, getting the majority of the carries with Dan Herron and Jordan Hall serving suspensions, ran for a pair of touchdowns. Jake Stoneburner caught a scoring pass for the Buckeyes (2-0), who were without eight players due to two sets of NCAA violations.

Toledo (1-1) had not put a point on the board in two previous matchups with Ohio State. But the Rockets took this one down to the final minute, making it into the red zone before failing to convert fourth down at the 16-yard line with 52 seconds left.

Toledo nearly became the first in-state team to beat Ohio State since Oberlin did it in 1921.

Ohio State scored twice in the second to take a 21-15 lead into the half, but Toledo wasn’t done, going back up on its first possession of the third quarter. The Buckeyes took the lead back on Hyde’s second touchdown with 3:20 left in the third and then stiffened on defense, keeping Toledo off the board for the final 28:25.

The Rockets went up, 15-7, in the first quarter when receiver Eric Page found the end zone for the second time, turning an inside screen pass into a 66-yard touchdown up the sideline.

The Buckeyes expected to have four players back from one-game suspensions on Saturday, but the NCAA decided it had more questions that needed to be answered.
