Freshman quarterback Tommy Rees threw three touchdown passes as Notre Dame topped visiting Utah, 28-3, on Saturday afternoon.

The 18-year-old Rees was 13-of-20 for 129 yards. He hit Michael Floyd early in the second quarter with a 3-yard touchdown, then hooked up with Duval Kamara twice in the third quarter for 26 and 12 yards to cap the scoring.

The Irish defense held the nation's ninth-ranked scoring offense to 265 yards. The Utes had been averaging 41 points per game.

Notre Dame's special teams and defense combined to block a punt, force a fumble and pick off a pass by Utah quarterback Jordan Wynn.

Joe Phillips kicked a 47-yard field goal to give Utah a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. Robert Blanton then blocked a Utah punt and ran it in from six yards out to give the Irish a 7-3 lead with 2:04 left in the first quarter.

The Irish improved to 5-5 and the Utes dropped their second straight game and fell to 8-2.
