Taylor Martinez passed for 167 yards and rushed for 74 more as No. 8 Nebraska moved one step closer to a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game with a 20-3 victory over Kansas on Saturday.

Rex Burkhead and Roy Helu combined for 159 rushing yards, and scored one touchdown apiece for the Cornhuskers (9-1, 5-1 Big 12), who need to win one of their final two games to secure a spot in the championship.

Martinez, who is still recovering from an ankle injury, let Burkhead and Helu do most of the work early as Nebraska opened up a 14-0 lead at the half on a 4-yard touchdown run by Burkhead in the first quarter and a 20-yard burst from Helu in the second.

That was more than enough for the Cornhuskers’ defense, which limited the struggling Jayhawks (3-7, 1-5) to 87 yards of total offense, including 15 passing.

Saturday marks the end of a rivalry that has been played for 105 straight seasons as Nebraska heads to the Big Ten in 2011.
