Aaron Bates hit Charlie Gantt with a 29-yard touchdown pass on a fake field goal attempt in overtime as Michigan State stunned Notre Dame 34-31 on Saturday.

After regulation ended 28-28, Notre Dame went ahead on a 33-yard field goal by David Ruffer.

Dayne Crist was 32-of-55 for 367 yards and four touchdowns for the Irish (1-2).

Michael Floyd opened the scoring for the Irish, catching a 7-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. Spartans quarterback Kirk Cousins then found Keshawn Martin in the end zone late in the second quarter with a 9-yard pass to make it 7-7 at halftime.

Edwin Baker exploded early in the third quarter for the Spartans (3-0), running 56 yards for a touchdown to give Michigan State a 14-7 lead. Crist then hit tight end Kyle Rudolph on a 10-yard scoring strike. Bell gave the Spartans a brief 21-14 lead with a 16-yard run, but Crist countered with another scoring pass, this time to Theo Riddick, to make it 21-21.

Crist threw his second scoring strike to Floyd, a 24-yarder, early in the fourth quarter as the Irish took a 28-21 lead. Cousins countered with a 24-yard TD pass to BJ Cunningham to make it 28-28.
