Quarterback Taylor Potts turned in his second straight strong effort to lead Texas Tech to a 52-17 win over New Mexico in a battle of border rivals.

Potts threw for four touchdowns in the season opener and followed that effort by completing 22-of-34 passes for 293 yards and three touchdowns against New Mexico. Lyle Leong, who played high school ball with Potts, caught four passes for 66 yards and two touchdowns.

Texas Tech (2-0) had three of its touchdowns set up via special teams – a blocked punt by Aaron Crawford, a 93-yard kickoff return by Eric Stephens and a blocked punt by Jonathan Brydon.

New Mexico (0-2) quarterback B.R. Holbrook completed 30-of-50 passes for 323 yards, but was intercepted twice and sacked four times. He also had a fumble that led to a touchdown by Chris Hernandez, who turned it into a 45-yard touchdown run.

The Texas Tech defense was led by Eric Ward, who had nine tackles. The Red Raiders intercepted two passes (Will Ford, Jarvis Phillips) and caused two fumbles.

Texas Tech now leads the series 34-6-2 and carries some momentum into next week’s home game against Texas. New Mexico hosts Utah in a Mountain West game.
