Butler 73, No. 17 St. John’s 69: Kellen Dunham made 6-of-7 shots from 3-point range en route to a season-high 28 points as the visiting Bulldogs defeated the Red Storm in Big East play.

Alex Barlow contributed 15 points and Roosevelt Jones chipped in with 14 for Butler (11-4, 1-1 Big East), which was 7-of-12 from behind the 3-point arc. Kameron Woods added eight points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs, who had a 34-26 edge on the boards.

D’Angelo Harrison matched a season high with 31 points and Phil Greene IV had 14 while Chris Obekpa added 11 points, seven rebounds and five blocks for St. John’s (11-3, 0-2). The Red Storm was without second-leading scorer Rysheed Jordan (14.0) after the school announced Friday he was taking an indefinite leave of absence.

Dunham scored 14 to help Butler erase an early seven-point deficit and the Bulldogs led by five before St. John’s recorded 11 of the final 13 – seven by Harrison – for a 30-26 halftime edge. Barlow drained a 3-pointer to ignite an 8-0 surge early in the second half that gave Butler a 38-33 lead.

The Bulldogs led 53-46 after Dunham’s 3-pointer with 7:16 left before the Red Storm ran off nine of the next 13, capped by Harrison’s 3-pointer. Dunham’s 3-pointer from left of the key with 2:05 left, followed by a pair of free throws by Woods, gave Butler a 66-59 lead and St. John’s could not get closer than three after that.

GAME NOTEBOOK: St. John’s coach Steve Lavin said in a statement released by the school that Jordan, “will not be with the team as he focuses his attention on personal and family circumstances.” … Woods increased his total to 752 career rebounds, moving past Lynn Mitchem (742) and Darren Fowlkes (748) into fourth on the school’s all-time list. … It was the first game for Butler’s Chris Holtmann since being promoted from interim to head coach to replace Brandon Miller, who had been on medical leave throughout this season.
