Connecticut 89, Saint Joseph’s 81 (OT): Shabazz Napier had 24 points, eight rebounds and six assists and the Huskies survived an upset bid by the Hawks in a second-round NCAA tournament game in Buffalo, N.Y.

DeAndre Daniels added 18 points for No. 7 seed Connecticut (27-8), which advanced to Saturday’s third-round game in the East Region against No. 2 seed Villanova. Ryan Boatright made four 3-pointers and scored 17 points to help the Huskies post their first NCAA tournament victory since winning the national title in 2011.

Langston Galloway led No. 10 seed Saint Joseph’s (24-10) with 25 points, including four 3-pointers, while DeAndre Bembry added 16 points. Ronald Roberts, Jr. collected 15 points and 10 rebounds and Chris Wilson chipped in 13 points for the Hawks, who struggled offensively after senior forward Halil Kanacevic fouled out with 3:47 remaining in overtime.

Saint Joseph's, making its first appearance in the tournament since 2008, led by 10 late in the first half before Boatright’s 3-pointer cut the deficit to 40-35 at the break. The Huskies tied the game at 70 with 30.8 seconds to play on Amida Brimah’s three-point play, and the teams headed to overtime after Napier’s shot at the buzzer bounced off the back rim.

Kanacevic had 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists before fouling out early in overtime, and Connecticut quickly took control with a 10-4 run. Napier, the American Athletic Conference player of the year, converted all seven of his shots from the foul line in overtime and finished with nine points in the extra session.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Galloway, Roberts and Bembry combined for 33 of the Hawks’ first 40 points in the first half, and the Hawks bench was held scoreless for the game … Galloway moved into second place on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,991 career points. … Connecticut made 14 free throws in a row before Boatright missed with nine seconds left in overtime and finished 18-of-20 from the foul line compared to 20-of-27 for Saint Joseph’s.
