CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Guard Ja'Quan Newton came off the bench to set career highs in points and rebounds to spark 15th-ranked Miami to an 85-63 victory over College of Charleston Saturday.

The sophomore scored 14 of his 20 points in the second half as the Hurricanes (9-1) ended an 11-day layoff for final exams to post their fourth consecutive victory.

The Cougars (7-3) cut a nine-point halftime deficit down to three points, 43-40, early in the second half, but the Hurricanes went on a 12-2 run to retake command. The Hurricanes led by as many as 28 points with just under four minutes left.

Guard Canyon Barry, the son of Miami's all-time leading scorer Rick Barry, who was at the game, matched Newton with 20 points to lead the Cougars in scoring.

Palmer, who also had seven rebounds, was one of four Hurricanes in double figures. Guard Sheldon McClellan scored 14, center Tonye Jekiri had 10 to go with his eight rebounds and forward Anthony Lawrence scored 11.
