No. 8 Maryland 75, Indiana 69: Dez Wells tallied 22 points and six rebounds while freshman Melo Trimble added 17 points as the Terrapins held off the Hoosiers in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament in Chicago.

Jake Layman tallied 10 points and nine rebounds for second-seeded Maryland (27-5), which will take its eight-game winning streak into Saturday’s semifinals against No. 3 seed Michigan State. Jared Nickens chipped in eight of his 10 points after intermission as the Terrapins finished 25-of-33 from the foul line.

Yogi Ferrell poured in 18 points while Troy Williams had 17 points and nine boards for No. 7 seed Indiana (20-13), which hopes for at-large NCAA Tournament bid after dropping four of its last five contests. Emmitt Holt grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds as the Hoosiers pulled down 18 offensive rebounds, but fellow freshman James Blackmon Jr. went 2-of-12 from the field and was limited to six points – 10 below his season average.

Trimble’s three-point play near the end of a 12-2 burst left Maryland with a seven-point edge before Indiana received a 3-pointer from Blackmon and late layup from Ferrell to close with two at the break. The Terrapins refused to give up the lead even after Ferrell drained a triple in the opening minutes of the second half, getting a 3-pointer from Nickens - moments after Indiana pulled within two - and five more points from the freshman during a 7-1 spurt after the Hoosiers closed within 55-54.

Indiana scored the next five points to pull with two on a foul shot from Holt, and Ferrell made it 64-62 on a pair of free throws with 2½ minutes remaining but the Hoosiers went more than six minutes without a field goal down the stretch until Max Hoetzel hit a 3-pointer with three seconds left. The Terrapins, who held a tenuous 68-66 edge with 38 seconds left, hit seven of its last eight foul shots to close it out.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Terrapins improved to 11-0 in games decided by six or fewer points. … The Hoosiers, who entered Friday with a school-record 301 3-pointers this season, went 7-of-24 beyond the arc. … Indiana (seven) and Maryland (eight) totaled 15 field goals in the second half after combining for 29 in the opening 20 minutes.
