No. 19 Michigan State 87, Loyola Chicago 52: Branden Dawson notched 15 points and seven rebounds to lead a balanced attack as the Spartans won their home opener.

Denzel Valentine scored 12 points to go with seven assists and six rebounds and Travis Trice contributed 13 points and seven assists for Michigan State (2-1), which recorded 27 assists in winning its 38th straight home opener, including the 20th under coach Tom Izzo. Matt Costello added a career-high 13 points and finished one shy of matching his career-high with 11 rebounds while Marvin Clark, Jr. provided 15 points.

Milton Doyle supplied 13 points and a pair of 3-pointers for the Ramblers (2-1), who dropped their 15th straight road game. Donte Ingram had eight points and Ben Richardson chipped in with seven points for Loyola.

Michigan State ran out to a quick 17-2 lead by taking advantage of sharp passing and poor shooting and turnovers by the Ramblers, who opened 1-of-9 from the field. James nailed a jumper to bring an end to Loyola's 7:23 scoring drought and a 13-0 run by the Spartans, who wasted little time in starting another, this time 12-0 en route to a 38-14 halftime advantage.

The Spartans came out after halftime and showed no let up, scoring 10 of the first 12 points to increase their cushion to 48-16 with 16:48 remaining. Dawson scored seven straight points to push the lead to 37 points nearing the midway point of the second half and the Spartans went on to lead by as many as 39 points in the victory.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Spartans, who had 15 assists in a loss to No. 3 Duke, had nine assists during the opening 12:13 of the first half and 14 for the half. ... Michigan State had six players with at least five points and enjoyed a 26-2 edge in points in the paint in the first half. ... Izzo improved to 470-188 with the Spartans.
