Virginia 82, Georgia Tech 54: Junior forward Akil Mitchell grabbed eight rebounds and connected on eight of nine field-goal attempts to score 18 points as the host Cavaliers salvaged a split of the season series with the Yellow Jackets.

Virginia (19-8, 9-5 ACC) also received 15 points from junior guard Joe Harris. Freshman forward Justin Anderson added 11 points and senior guard Jontel Evans scored 10.

Freshman guard Marcus Georges-Hunt led Georgia Tech (14-12, 4-10) with 12 points. Junior center Daniel Miller finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

A 3-pointer by Anderson gave Virginia an 8-7 lead just over four minutes into the game, and the Cavaliers never looked back. The Anderson 3-pointer came in the midst of a nearly six-minute-long Yellow Jacket drought that saw a 7-2 advantage turn into a 14-7 deficit.

Virginia shot 54.2 percent from the field and forced 16 Georgia Tech turnovers.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Evans dished out eight assists, the 10th game in his last 11 that he's had at least five. ... Virginia F/C Mike Tobey returned from a five-game absence due to mononucleosis. He scored seven points. … Georgia Tech fell to 1-4 all-time at John Paul Jones Arena.
