West Virginia 68, Virginia Tech 67: Juwan Staten scored on a driving layup with five seconds remaining as the Mountaineers knocked the visiting Hokies from the ranks of the undefeated.

The field goal was the only one of the game for Staten, who finished with six points as West Virginia (4-3) notched its biggest win of the season. Erick Green, who scored a game-high 23 points for Virginia Tech (7-1) missed a 20-foot jumper at the buzzer as the Hokies had their lowest offensive output of the year.

Aaric Murray led the Mountaineers with 15 points and Kevin Noreen came off the bench to post his first career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds as West Virginia rallied from a five-point, second-half deficit after squandering a 30-24 halftime advantage.

Green, the nation's second leading scorer, also handed out a season-high 10 assists to record his first double-double of the year. Robert Brown added a season-best 21 points for the Hokies, who shot just 41.5 percent from the field.

NOTEBOOK: This was the first meeting between West Virginia and Virginia Tech since the 2003-04 season when both schools were in the Big East. Tech had won the last two games in the series, but West Virginia has now won seven of the last 10. ... Virginia Tech's Jarell Eddie, the third leading scorer in the ACC (17.1), was in foul trouble most of the game and scored a season-low five points. ... Green has topped the 20-point mark in all eight games this season. The school-record for 20-point games to start a year is nine held by former All-American Bimbo Coles.
