California 73, Drake 70: Justin Cobbs scored 21 points, including the final four of the game, as the Bears edged the Bulldogs in the first round of the DirecTV Classic in Anaheim, Calif.

Cobbs buried a 15-footer to give Cal (4-0) a 71-70 lead with 1:09 to play. Following a miss by Drake’s Ben Simons, Cobbs sank a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left.

Allen Crabbe, who entered the game leading the nation in scoring at 26.7 points per game, finished with 15 for Cal. Richard Solomon added 10.

The Bulldogs built a nine-point lead in the second half before the Bears went on a 14-2 run to reclaim the lead.

Drake (1-2) got 13 points from four different players, including Simons. Jordan Clarke had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cal was picked third in the preseason Pac-12 poll. … Cal’s Ricky Kreklow missed the game with a foot injury. … Cal C Solomon and coach Mike Montgomery picked up a technical fouls early in the second half and Simons hit all ensuing four free throws.
