Virginia Tech 80, East Tennessee State 62: Erick Green scored 21 points as the Hokies rolled past the Buccaneers and won their 10th consecutive season opener in James Johnson’s coaching debut.
Jarell Eddie had 17 points and 10 rebounds while Robert Brown added 16 points for Virginia Tech (1-0), which improved to 15-3 all-time against East Tennessee State (0-1).
The Hokies jumped ahead for good less than four minutes into the game on a jumper from Brown and took a double-digit lead they would not relinquish at the 6:01 mark of the first half on his first 3-pointer of the contest.
Virginia Tech, which shot 10 of 25 from beyond the arc, continued its 3-point barrage with five more in the second half as the Buccaneers never pulled closer than 14 points for the rest of the game.
Lester Wilson finished with 20 points and nine rebounds for East Tennessee State.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Green needs just 38 points to become the 43rd Hokie to record 1,000 career points. … Virginia Tech reached the 80-point plateau just three times last season. … The Buccaneers have dropped three straight season openers.
