Dwight Powell scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Cardinal past the Dons in a season-opening contest held at Oakland’s Oracle Arena.

Powell scored 18 second-half points despite battling cramping problems late in the game. Josh Huestis chipped in with 11 points and nine rebounds for Stanford, which won the NIT title last season.

Freshman Avry Holmes scored 17 points and UCLA transfer De’End Parker tallied 13 in their San Francisco debuts. Cole Dickerson added 11 points and a career-best 19 rebounds for the Dons, who were hurt by 14 turnovers.

The Cardinal led 32-31 at halftime and Powell scored seven consecutive points early in the second half to give Stanford a 42-33 lead with 16:13 remaining. The Cardinal stretched the lead to 15 points with 12 1/2 minutes to play and maintained control down the stretch.

Stanford built a 16-5 lead midway through the first half by scoring 13 consecutive points. San Francisco went 8:04 without scoring, missing all nine field-goal attempts and committing seven turnovers during the drought.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Powell’s previous career high was 20 points. He averaged 5.8 points per game as a sophomore last season. … The Dons had a 40-25 rebounding edge. … Stanford standout Chasson Randle had only eight points on 3-of-8 shooting and scored only one point in the second half.
