Jordan Adams scored 21 points and Travis Wear added 17 as the Bruins finished the game on a 23-7 run and opened the remodeled Pauley Pavilion with an impressive victory.

Prior to the game, UCLA was dealt a severe blow when the NCAA declared freshman Shabazz Muhammad ineligible because of violating amateurism rules. Athletic director Dan Guerrero said it’s unknown how many games the top recruit will miss.

The Bruins led by nine at halftime and opened the second half on a 18-9 run to pull away from the Sycamores, who shot 31.7 percent from the field and were 5-of-26 from 3-point range.

Justin Gant and Khristian Smith had 11 points apiece for Indiana State, which used a 12-4 run to cut the Bruins’ lead to 63-52 with 7:28 left before UCLA dominated the final minutes.

David Wear had 13 points and 10 rebounds for UCLA, which improved to 8-2 in season-opening games under coach Ben Howland. The Bruins shot 48.2 percent from the field and outrebounded the Sycamores 49-28.

GAME NOTEBOOK: John Wooden coached Indiana State for two seasons beginning in 1946 prior to his 27-year run at UCLA. …. UCLA was playing its first game at Pauley Pavilion since the iconic arena underwent a 33-month, $136 renovation. … UCLA freshman guard Kyle Anderson had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
