Will Barton set career highs with 25 points and 11 rebounds as No. 8 Memphis survived a 99-97 double overtime thriller against Tennessee in the consolation bracket of the Maui Invitational on Tuesday.

Antonio Barton added 21 points and hit the eventual game-winning jumper with 1:16 remaining in the second extra period for the Tigers (2-1), who overcame a dominant effort by the Volunteers’ Jeronne Maymon.

Maymon, who scored a career-high 32 points and set a tournament record with 20 rebounds, sent the game into overtime with a driving layup, but came up short on a turnaround jumper to win it in overtime and again on a fade-away jumper to tie the game late in double overtime.

Memphis will play the winner of Chaminade-Georgetown in the fifth-place game on Wednesday, while Tennessee (2-2) will meet the loser of that game in the seventh-place game.

After an uneven performance in Monday’s loss to Michigan, Memphis displayed its incredible offensive potential during a 55-point first half, breaking open a tie game with a 16-0 run.

Despite trailing by 10 points at halftime, the Volunteers remained in the game by holding the Tigers to 28 second-half points and knocking down their free throws, which eventually enabled Tennessee to knot the game at 83-83 with seven seconds left on Maymon’s layup.
