Tyler Zeller scored 22 points and Harrison Barnes added 18 as No. 7 North Carolina held off host Maryland, 83-74 for its fifth straight win Saturday.

Kendall Marshall added nine points and a career-high 16 assists for North Carolina (20-3, 7-1 ACC), which ended a three-game losing streak in College Park and moved into a tie with Florida State atop the ACC.

Maryland (13-9, 3-5) has struggled at times in the first year under Mark Turgeon – a former Roy Williams’ assistant at Kansas – but the Terrapins gave Williams’ team all it could handle. Terrell Stoglin, the ACC’s leading scorer, poured in 20 points and freshman Alex Len had an unexpectedly strong performance with 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

The Tar Heels nearly got caught looking ahead to Wednesday's home matchup with fifth-ranked Duke.

Maryland led by as many as nine points in the second half, but North Carolina, using its superior depth, surged ahead with a 15-5 run that made it 67-62 with 5:23 left.

Stoglin’s jumper pulled Maryland to within 70-69 moments later, but the Tar Heels closed on a 13-5 run.

Barnes’ jumper with just over a minute left gave North Carolina a 76-70 lead and all but sealed the win. Marshall, Zeller and Barnes then combined for five free throws and John Henson’s dunk at the buzzer – accompanied by loud boos – provided the final margin.
