Rob Jones collected 28 points and eight rebounds and Stephen Holt scored 23 as No. 16 Saint Mary’s scratched its way to a 12th straight win, 84-73 over visiting San Diego on Thursday.

Matthew Dellavedova chipped in 17 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Gaels (22-2, 11-0 WCC), who will get another stiff conference test next week at Gonzaga.

San Diego (8-14, 3-7) came within six points of knocking off Saint Mary’s at home on Jan. 5 and was upset-minded again Thursday. The Toreros shot 68 percent in the first half to take a 42-38 lead into the break and held the lead until the 10:46 mark of the second, when Dellavedova buried a 3-pointer to give the Gaels a 61-60 edge.

Saint Mary’s came into the contest leading the West Coast Conference in scoring defense and finally put that on display in the second half, holding San Diego to three field goals in a span of just over eight minutes.

The Gaels turned that defense into points, opening up a 73-66 edge with 4:06 remaining. A pair of dunks from Jones in the final 54 seconds sealed the win.

Chris Manresa scored 25 points to lead the Toreros.
