Hollis Thompson added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Hoyas (9-1), who won their seventh consecutive game. The Hoyas shot 58 percent from the field, including 6-of-16 from 3-point range, en route to a 32-26 halftime lead.

Senior center Henry Sims finished with 17 points and a team-high six assists for Georgetown, which held their opponent to fewer than 60 points for the seventh time this season.

American’s (8-4) defense kept the team close for most of the first half, forcing nine first-half turnovers, but the Eagles fell apart after halftime and allowed the Hoyas to extend their lead to 20 after Starks’s 3-pointer with 9:36 remaining.

Charles Hinkle, who entered as the nation’s fifth-leading scorer with 22 points per game, finished with a team-high 16 points. John Schoof added 12 for the Eagles, who lost for just the second time in their last 10 games.

With the win, Georgetown improved to 49-3 all-time against American.
