Trent Lockett had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Arizona State withstood a second-half push from Montana State in a 78-72 season-opening win on Friday in Tempe, Ariz.

The Sun Devils (1-0) led 33-21 at halftime but couldn’t break away from the Bobcats until late in the game. They held a single-digit lead for much of the second half, and Montana State closed the gap to 75-70 on Christian Moon’s 3-pointer with 26 seconds left.

But Arizona State, which converted 28 of 35 free throws, made three of four attempts in the closing seconds to preserve the win.

Keala King had 16 points and Carrick Felix added 13 for the Sun Devils, who won their season opener for the just the third time in the last six years.

Lockett’s double-double was the second of his career. The junior had 12 points and 10 rebounds in a loss against Richmond last season.

The Bobcats (0-1), who lost more scoring and rebounding than any other Big Sky team, were led by Shawn Reid’s 19-point, seven-rebound effort. Xavier Johnson-Blount added 13 and Rod Singleton chipped in 12.

Arizona State, among the most inexperienced teams in the Pac-12, is coming off a 13-18 season and doesn’t have a senior on its roster for the first time since 1956-57.
