Jordan Theodore and Herb Pope scored 20 points apiece as Seton Hall knocked off Virginia Commonwealth, 69-54, at the Charleston Classic on Thursday.
Edwin Fuquan hit 4 of 5 from 3-point range and finished with 18 points for the Pirates (2-0), who went 21-of-25 from the free throw line.
The Rams (1-1) are trying to replace four starters from last season’s Final Four team. The lone returning starter, Branford Burgess, is having some trouble as the go-to scorer. The senior swingman went 4-of-10 from the floor on Thursday and is 4-of-22 through VCU’s first two games.
Seton Hall pulled away steadily from the Rams in the second half, turning a six-point lead with 12:02 left into a 65-47 edge when Pope hit a jumper with 3:07 remaining.
The Pirates, who lost leading scorer Jeremy Hazell, are not having a problem replacing the points. Theodore has totaled 45 points through the first two games and Pope is right behind with 41.
Seton Hall will take on either Georgia Tech or St. Joseph’s in the semifinals on Friday.
