After getting a bit of a scare from East Tennessee State in its opener, Virginia Tech used a red-hot shooting night to cruise to a 91-46 home win over Monmouth in the first round of the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off at Cassell Coliseum.

Virginia Tech figures to get plenty of production from a highly regarded recruiting class, and it was freshman Robert Brown who led the way with 19 points, hitting double digits for the second time in two collegiate games.

Brown was only one of five Hokies in double figures. Senior Dorenzo Hudson scored 18 points, and sophomore Ty Garland matched him with a career-high 18 on 7-of-7 shooting off the bench.

Hudson, who appeared in only nine games last season before undergoing foot surgery and receiving a medical redshirt, was a force in transition. He broke away for a dunk early and put away two fast-break layups to cap the Hokies' 10-2 run to start the second half.

Sophomore Jarell Eddie hit double digits in scoring for the third time in his career with 13 points, and junior Erick Green added 11 points and five assists after sitting out the opener with an Achilles injury.

Monmouth (0-2) shot a dismal 26.8 percent (15 of 56), including 1 of 17 from 3-point range. Ed Waite led the Hawks with 12 points and 11 rebounds off the bench for his second career double-double.

The Hokies shot 62.5 percent (30 of 48) and were 10 of 15 from 3-point range.
