Brigham Young emerged with a 74-73 victory over St. Mary's in a back-and-forth championship game Saturday night in the South Padre Invitational.

Jimmer Fredette drained a 3-pointer to put BYU up 72-70 with 11 seconds left. After the Gaels failed to convert on the other end, Charles Abouo grabbed the defensive rebound and sank the clinching free throws with two seconds remaining.

Mickey McConnell hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for St. Mary's to leave the final margin at one point.

Fredette led all scorers with 24 points. Jackson Emery added 15 points and five steals for the Cougars (6-0).

Rob Jones led four St. Mary's players in double figures with 18 points, while McConnell and Mitchell Young each scored 12 for the Gaels (6-1).
