Trent Lockett scored 20 points to lift Arizona State to victory over Washington State, 71-69, Saturday in Tempe.

The Sun Devils clung to victory when Washington State’s Abe Lodwick’s potential game-winning 3-point attempt was off mark as the final buzzer sounded.

Arizona State (10-16, 2-12 Pac-10) came away victorious despite a big game from Pac-10 leading scorer Klay Thompson, who scored 24 of his game-high 28 points after the break.

The Cougars (17-10, 7-8 Pac-10) clawed their way back from a 40-28 halftime deficit, riding the hot hand of Thompson, who scored 14 consecutive points for WSU at one point in the second half.

Junior DeAngelo Casto added 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Washington State, whose NCAA Tournament aspirations took a huge blow in the loss.

Freshman Chanse Creekmur added 18 points for Arizona State. Keala King came off the bench to provide a spark with 10 points.
