Matt Gatens had a game-high 19 points as Iowa put on an impressive first-half shooting display on the way to a 72-52 rout of visiting Michigan State on Wednesday night.

The Hawkeyes (9-13, 2-8 Big Ten) stunned the Spartans by hitting 17 of their first 21 shots and bursting out to a 30-8 lead after just 12 minutes. Gatens had 10 of Iowa's first 18 points and the rest of the starting rotation took over from there, with four Hawkeyes starters finishing in double figures.

Michigan State (13-9, 5-5) closed the gap to 15 in the second half but would draw no closer on the way to its fourth loss in the past five games. That doesn't bode well for the Spartans, who play five of their next six games against ranked teams – including a road date with No. 1 Ohio State on Feb. 15.

Iowa's Jarryd Cole had 13 points and nine rebounds while Bryce Cartwright added 12 points and 10 assists. Eric May chipped in with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting in the rout.

Kalin Lucas had 12 points to lead the Spartans, but shot just 5 for 16 from the field. Derrick Nix added 12 points in a reserve role for Michigan State, which missed its first 12 3-point attempts before Durrell Summers finally connected with 14:22 remaining in the game.

The Spartans finished 4 of 18 from beyond the arc.
