Ben Hansbrough took over down the stretch to lead No. 14 Notre Dame to a 56-51 upset of No. 2 Pittsburgh Monday on the Panthers’ home court.

Hansbrough scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half, including eight straight during the final three minutes to help the Irish (17-4, 6-3 Big East) knock off Pittsburgh for the second straight time. Notre Dame also beat Pitt in last year’s Big East Tournament.

The Irish slowed the pace throughout the game, holding the Panthers (19-2, 7-1 Big East) to a season-low in points.

The loss snaps the Panthers’ nine-game winning streak and drops them into a tie with Villanova for first place in the Big East.

Carleton Scott added 16 points for the Irish, who defeated their fourth ranked opponent this season.

Gilbert Brown led the Panthers with 13 points, and Brad Wanamaker finished with 12.

Notre Dame gets 10 days off to enjoy the upset before returning to action at DePaul on Feb. 3. Pittsburgh will try to bounce back at Rutgers Saturday.
