Trailing 34-33 at halftime, the Aztecs (17-0, 2-0 Mountain West) used an 11-2 run late in the game to take a 12-point lead with 4:52 remaining. Senior forward Malcolm Thomas recorded his fourth double-double in his last seven games, finishing with 17 points and 14 rebounds.

Utah junior Will Clyburn scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Josh Watkins scored 24 points. J.J. O’Brien had 10 rebounds for the Utes (7-9, 0-2 Mountain West), who lost their sixth straight game.

Senior point guard D.J. Gay, who missed two practices this week with a bruised calf, scored 18 points for the Aztecs, who are off to the best start in school history. San Diego State’s 17-game winning streak is the second-longest in the country, trailing only the 24 straight wins by defending national champion Duke.

San Diego State, which recorded its first back-to-back wins in Salt Lake City, entered the game 3-30 at the Huntsman Arena. The Aztecs reinforced their reputation as a strong second-half team; they’ve outscored their opponents, 639-486, after halftime.
