Jeff Brooks scored a career-high 23 points and Penn State had one of its best shooting games of the season, as the Nittany Lions beat Indiana 69-60 on Monday night in the Big Ten Conference opener for both teams in Bloomington, Ind.

The win for Penn State (8-4, 1-0 Big Ten) was its first away from home this season and snapped a two-game losing streak. The victory also marked only the second win ever for the Nittany Lions at Indiana’s Assembly Hall in 17 trips. Indiana (9-5, 0-1 Big Ten), which has dropped three straight, lost for the first time at home this season in 10 games.

Brooks, who came in averaging 12.3 points, scored 13 in the first half as Penn State raced to a 14-point lead. The Nittany Lions lost the lead momentarily in the second half, before using a decisive 9-4 run late to hold off the Hoosiers. Penn State, statistically the worst shooting team in the Big Ten, shot 53.8 percent from the field, hitting 21-39, including 47 percent from 3-point range (8-17).

The senior trio of Brooks, Talor Battle, and David Jackson combined for 57 points, 22 rebounds, and shot 8-15 from beyond the arc to lead Penn State. Battle, the Big Ten’s second leading scorer, added 19 points, while Jackson scored 13 of his 15 in the first half as Penn State built a 30-16 lead with 6:16 left. Brooks, who also blocked three shots, and Jackson each grabbed eight rebounds.

Indiana, which has no seniors on its roster, was led by junior guard Verdell Jones III who had 15 points. Victor Oladipo added 14.
