Blake Hoffarber led four players in double figures with 17 points as Minnesota survived a home scare with a 76-69 victory against Siena on Monday.

Ralph Sampson III scored 13 points, freshman Austin Hollins added 12 and transfer Trevor Mbakwe had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Gophers, who allowed the Saints to shoot 54.2 percent and knock down 9-of-16 shots from the arc.

Hoffarber was 4-of-11 from the arc, and he made all four free throws and added seven assists.

The three-time defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Saints (0-2) gave the Gophers a challenge. Siena led throughout the first half behind the play of Clarence Jackson, who finished with a game-high 29 points.

Minnesota trailed by as much as eight early, but whittled the deficit to one at halftime, then took control in the opening minutes of the second half.

The Minnesota bigs also limited Siena’s star forward Ryan Rossiter, who averaged 13.8 points and 11.1 rebounds last season, to eight points.

The Golden Gophers threatened to blow it open when Rodney Williams flushed an alley-oop late, but the Saints kept it close to the end.
