No. 3 Virginia 70, Wake Forest 34: Anthony Gill paced a balance effort with 11 points and the visiting Cavaliers closed the first half with a 28-8 burst to smother the Demon Deacons.

Darion Atkins added 10 points for third-ranked Virginia (26-1, 14-1 ACC), which held Wake Forest (12-16, 4-11) to three field goals in the final 12 minutes of the first half. Malcolm Brogdon and Devon Hall each contributed nine points.

Virginia, the nation’s leader in scoring defense at 50.5 points coming in, won for the first time at Wake Forest in 11 games by limiting the Demon Deacons to 21.8 percent shooting. Konstantinos Mitoglou scored 10 points to lead the Demon Deacons, who trailed 36-15 at halftime.

Wake Forest trailed 8-7 seven minutes in, but missed 14 of its final 17 shots in the half as the Cavaliers pulled away. Hall’s 3-pointer capped a 9-0 burst to put Virginia ahead 17-7, Brogdon’s bucket with just under six minutes to play pushed the lead to 25-9 and Isaiah Wilkins’ layup just before the halftime buzzer extended the advantage to 21 points.

Gill scored on a dunk on Virginia’s opening possession of the second half and Atkins scored the Cavaliers’ next seven points to stretch the lead to 45-19. Gill’s bucket with under 12 ½ minutes to play gave Virginia a 31-point advantage and the Cavaliers led by as many as 38 points.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Virginia played without G London Perrantes, who suffered a concussion and broken nose after colliding with Brogdon in Sunday’s victory over Florida State. … The Cavaliers tied a school record (1981, 1982) with their 10th road victory. … Wake Forest shot 4-of-22 from 3-point range.
