WASHINGTON -- Washington Wizards forward Kris Humphries recognized the reality this summer. His shooting range needed expanding for the modern NBA style. Clearly, practice paid off.

Humphries scored 23 points and sank three of his career-high five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Washington Wizards snapped a three-game losing streak with a 108-99 win over the Orlando Magic on Saturday night.

Guard Garrett Temple matched his career high with 18 points for the Wizards (4-4), who pulled ahead with an 8-0 run for a 94-90 lead. Washington has won 10 straight over Orlando (5-6). Guard John Wall finished with 15 points and 11 assists.

The Wizards played their second straight game without starting guard, leading scorer and 3-point shooting threat Bradley Beal. Despite his absence, the Wizards made 12 of 29 shots from beyond the arc.

Washington limited Orlando's perimeter shooting as the Magic finished 4 of 18 on 3-pointers.

Humphries topped that total by himself, which is rather remarkable considering he entered his 12th season 2 of 26 all-time. Before this season, Humphries had not made a 3-pointer since 2004.

Though a key performer for much of last season, Humphries was a non-factor during the playoffs as Washington deployed more perimeter shooters. That led the 30-year to learn new tricks.

"It's been different this year being on the perimeter this much," Humphries said. "I don't think I've completely made the transition yet. I need to get my rebound numbers up ... but other things are coming together."

Center Nikola Vucevic had 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Magic. Guard Evan Fournier scored 18 points, Elfrid Payton 17 and forward Aaron Gordon 12.

Orlando entered with four wins in its last five games, including 102-93 over the Utah Jazz on Friday night. However, the Magic remain winless against their Southeast Division rival dating to March 29, 2013. Washington won the season opener 88-87 on Oct. 28 in Orlando.

"Well, they're better than we are," Magic coach Scott Skiles said of the futility against the Wizards. "I mean, they don't win as many games against us over and over and over again and not be better than us. They're better than we are.

"But we should be the ones flying down the floor in the third quarter instead of them doing it to us."

The first of Humphries' three treys in the fourth quarter came during the decisive run and gave Washington the lead for good at 92-90.

After Fournier's 3-point play cut Washington's lead to 101-99 with 1:20 left, Humphries drained his fifth 3-pointer from top of the arc. Wall scored the next three points to close out the Magic.

"He was big," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said of Humphries, who is 13 of 28 on 3-pointers this season. "Shot it with confidence. Didn't turn (opportunities) down."

Defense sank the Wizards in the previous three losses. Opponents averaged 119 points and won by margins of 20, 15 and 24 points, capped by Tuesday's 125-101 debacle against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Wittman emphasized defense during subsequent practices.

"If we're going to win, it's going to be with defense," Wittman said. "We're going to score points. I wasn't worried about that even with Brad being out. If we play the right way, take care of the ball, we're going to score enough points to win."

Temple, called an "energizer bunny" by Wittman, was also a surprise perimeter factor. In his first start of the season, he made three 3-pointers during his 32 minutes. Temple entered the game 1 of 5 from deep this season with 35 total minutes in the previous seven games.

Wizards center Marcin Gortat had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Orlando led 56-50 at halftime as Vucevic nearly posted a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. However, Washington returned with energy starting the third quarter, preventing the Magic from extending the margin.

"We're starting too many third quarters with low energy and that's just something we've got to get better at," Skiles said. "Not anything you can go and practice, but it's just a point that we have to make. We may have to change the lineup to start the second half."
