LaMarcus Aldridge had 29 points and 10 rebounds and Wesley Matthews sealed the game in the final seconds with his fourth steal as host Portland defeated Houston to take a 3-1 lead in the first-round Western Conference series.

Nicolas Batum scored 25 points, Damian Lillard had 23 points and eight assists and Matthews scored 21 points for Portland, which can clinch the series with a win in Houston on Wednesday. The Rockets had a chance to force a second overtime but Matthews stole the ball from Patrick Beverley near midcourt to thwart Houston’s final opportunity.

James Harden scored 28 points, Chandler Parsons added 26 points and Dwight Howard contributed 25 points and 14 rebounds for the Rockets. Troy Daniels added 17 points for Houston, which led by 11 points in the third quarter before the Trail Blazers rallied.

Batum scored 13 of his points after the third quarter and recorded the first five of a 7-0 surge and Lillard capped it with a layup as Portland took a 117-110 lead with 2:19 left. The Rockets battled back within two on Harden’s baseline jumper with one minute left and later pulled within 121-120 when Daniels made three free throws with 8.9 seconds remaining before Mo Williams tacked on two free throws with 7.9 seconds to play.

Houston took a 61-51 lead into the break and Portland pulled within two early in the fourth before Houston scored the next six for a 92-84 lead with 8:30 left in regulation. Batum’s 3-pointer gave the Trail Blazers a 99-97 lead with 4:31 remaining and a basket by Aldridge made it a five-point margin with 2:52 left but the Rockets twice caught the Trail Blazers, the second on a dunk by Howard with 3.6 seconds left to force overtime.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Daniels, the Game 3 hero, went 4-of-5 from 3-point range while playing 21 minutes off the bench. … Portland C Robin Lopez collected 11 rebounds before fouling out. … Both teams went 11-of-28 from 3-point range with Lillard going 5-of-7 for the Trail Blazers and Parsons making 4-of-6 for the Rockets.
