Carmelo Anthony erupted for 37 points as the New York Knicks prevailed 106-104 over the Boston Celtics in the Christmas Day season opener for both teams.

Anthony shot a blistering 10-of-17 from the field and made 13 of 15 free throws for the Knicks, who built up a 10-point halftime advantage before getting outscored 35-17 in a dominant third quarter by Boston.

With the game tied in the final moments, Anthony drew a Marquis Daniels foul and made both free throws to give the Knicks a two-point advantage. The Celtics inbounded the ball and set up a play for Kevin Garnett, but his 14-footer missed the mark and the Knicks recovered the rebound.

Radon Rondo led the way with 31 points, 13 assists and five steals, who were forced to play without perennial All-Star Paul Pierce (heel).

Sasha Pavlovic started in his place but was largely ineffective, failing to register a shot in 15 minutes of action.

A'mare Stoudemire had 21 points and Toney Douglas chipped in with 19 for the Knicks.
