Dirk Nowitzki scored 10 of his 25 points in the final five minutes and the Dallas Mavericks jumped out fast, fell behind and came back Monday night to post an 89-87 home victory over the Boston Celtics, who had their five-game winning streak snapped.

Nowitzki snapped a tie when he hit a jump shot over Glen Davis from the left wing with 17 seconds left. The Mavericks survived a wide-open 3-pointer by Rajon Rondo and a right corner buzzer heave from Kevin Garnett to snap a three-game home losing streak to the Celtics.

Boston took an 87-82 lead on a jumper from the key by Paul Pierce with two minutes left, but Nowitzki muscled home a left-handed drive and Jason Terry drained a 3-pointer to tie it with 73 seconds left after Paul Pierce was blocked by Tyson Chandler going to the rim.

Garnett missed a shot in the paint, setting the stage for Nowitzki.

Terry scored 17 points and Chandler added 12 and 13 rebounds for the Mavericks, who snapped a two-game home losing streak. Jason Kidd did not score but finished with 10 assists.

Pierce scored 14 of his 24 points in the second half and Garnett had 14 of his 18 after the break and added 15 rebounds for the Celtics.

Rondo collected 11 points, 15 assists, six rebounds and five steals for Boston, which was playing its fifth game in seven nights.

After suffering through a miserable first half in which they shot just 35 percent, the Celtics made 13-of-21 shots in the third quarter to cut a 10-point halftime deficit to 70-69. Pierce scored 10 in the period.
