Bryant missed all five of his first-half shots but the Lakers still held a 46-45 lead at halftime and his first basket of the game with 7:24 left in the third quarter gave Los Angeles a 60-51 advantage. Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy was whistled for a technical foul moments later and Bryant hit the free throw to begin a personal 10-2 run that left the Lakers with a 16-point advantage en route to an 81-65 lead entering the fourth.

Detroit pulled within eight points midway through the quarter before Bryant found Hill for baskets on back-to-back possessions and Hill scored again with 3:46 left to make it 96-86. A 3-pointer by Luigi Datome and a dunk from Jonas Jerebko pulled the Pistons within seven points with a minute to go but Los Angeles finished it off at the line.
