Mavericks 109, Clippers 102 (OT): Dirk Nowitzki scored eight of his season-high 33 points in overtime and Dallas edged visiting Los Angeles for its third straight win.

Dallas led 103-100 with 22 seconds left when Matt Barnes missed a 3-pointer, and the Mavericks closed the game with six straight free throws to move one game behind the eighth-place Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference.

Chris Paul scored a season-high 33 points for the Clippers, who were outscored 12-5 in overtime and fell one-half game behind third-place Denver in the West. Caron Butler and Blake Griffin added 14 points apiece, and Paul made 12 of his 15 shots from the field.

Paul scored the Clippers’ last 10 points in regulation and put Los Angeles ahead 97-95 with 5.3 seconds left before O.J. Mayo forced the extra period when he scored on a layup with 0.6 seconds remaining.

Vince Carter scored 14 points and Darren Collison had 13 for Dallas, which won for the ninth time in its last 12 games. The Mavericks improved to 2-13 against the top five teams (San Antonio, Denver, Oklahoma City, Memphis and the Clippers) in the West despite missing 17 of their 23 shots from 3-point range.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Los Angeles G Chauncey Billups missed his third straight game due to a strained right groin. … Nowitzki passed Patrick Ewing (24,815) for 17th place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. Nowitzki has 24,845 career points. … Los Angeles fell to 0-2 in overtime, while Dallas improved to 2-8.
