Rhys Hoskins homered twice in his return from the injured list and Kyle Gibson matched his season high by pitching eight innings as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the host San Diego Padres 7-4 Sunday afternoon.

Odubel Herrera went 4-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBIs and J.T. Realmuto also went deep as the Phillies took two of three games in the weekend series.

San Diego pinch-hitter Austin Nola hit a three-run double with two outs in the ninth inning, but the Padres suffered their ninth loss in the past 11 games and dropped a game behind Cincinnati in the chase for the National League's second and final wild-card playoff berth.

Gibson (9-5), acquired at the trade deadline from Texas, won for the first time in his past three starts. The right-hander allowed one run on six hits, with one walk and three strikeouts.

Hoskins, playing in his first game since Aug. 5 because of a left groin strain, led off the fourth inning with a deep shot to left-center field off left-hander Ryan Weathers, tying the score at 1-1 and sparking a three-run inning. Ronald Torreyes and Travis Jankowski singled with one out, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Gibson and scored as Herrera grounded a two-run single into right field.

Hoskins hit another solo shot to left with two outs in the fifth, off right-hander Miguel Diaz, for his team-leading 26th homer of the season.

With the Phillies leading 4-1, Herrera led off the seventh with a homer to center and, following a one-out walk to Bryce Harper, Realmuto hit a two-run shot to right, both off Diaz.

Padres reliever Craig Stammen got a spot start and pitched two scoreless innings before Weathers (4-6) and Diaz ran into trouble. Weathers gave up three runs on five hits in two innings.

San Diego scored its lone run off Gibson in the first inning. Trent Grisham led off with a double and advanced to third when Fernando Tatis Jr. legged out a double on a ground ball to left field. Manny Machado brought home the run with a sacrifice fly to left.
