Paul Goldschmidt continued his torrid stretch with a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning, and the host St. Louis Cardinals held on for a 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.

Tommy Edman added two hits and two stolen bases for St. Louis, which broke a first-place tie with the Cubs on the eve of the trade deadline. The Cardinals improved to 13-5 since the All-Star break.

Javier Baez drove in the lone run for Chicago, which has lost three of four and six of eight.

Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright was trying for his third straight win, but left with a no-decision. The 37-year-old limited the Cubs to one run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out five. Righty Giovanny Gallegos (3-1) replaced Wainwright and pitched a hitless, scoreless inning to get the win.

Carlos Martinez recorded the final four outs to notch his 11th save of the season. He struck out Ian Happ, Willson Contreras and Robel Garcia before getting Jason Heyward to ground out to end the game.

Cubs right-hander Yu Darvish (3-5) drew the hard-luck loss despite holding the Cardinals to two runs on six hits in six innings. He walked none and struck out nine, two shy of his season high.

The Cubs opened the scoring in the top of the fourth. Baez ripped a two-out single to left field to drive in Heyward, who led off the inning with a single to deep right field.

The Cardinals answered quickly in the bottom of the fourth to even the score at 1.

Jose Martinez started the inning with a single to right-center field and advanced to third on a single by Goldschmidt. Two batters later, Martinez scored on a wild pitch by Darvish.

St. Louis pulled ahead 2-1 in the sixth when Goldschmidt clubbed a solo shot into the visitors' bullpen beyond the left field wall. It was the 25th homer of the season and the seventh in the past eight games for the veteran first baseman, who was named the National League Player of the Week one day earlier.
