Miguel Cabrera had three hits, including a grand slam, and drove in five runs to power the Detroit Tigers past the visiting Tampa Bay Rays 9-6 on Tuesday.

Cabrera blasted his fifth career grand slam to snap a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning. He missed the previous two games due to knee soreness and revealed prior to the game he would become a full-time designated hitter.

Dawel Lugo had three hits, including a two-run triple, and Niko Goodrum rapped three hits and scored twice for Detroit.

Ryan Carpenter (1-2) notched his second career win by holding the Rays to two runs and seven hits in seven innings. He struck out three without issuing a walk. Shane Greene recorded the last three outs and collected his 19th save.

The Tigers, who began a six-game homestand, had lost their past 10 games at Comerica Park. Their last home win came on May 8 against the Los Angeles Angels.

Willy Adames hit a grand slam and Avisail Garcia contributed a two-run homer for the Rays, who have lost four straight. Blake Snell (3-5) allowed six runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out eight.

The Tigers scored a run in the first when Goodrum singled, stole second, advanced on a throwing error and scored on Cabrera's opposite-field double.

Goodrum was robbed of a hit by second baseman Daniel Robertson with runners in scoring position in the second inning.

Tampa Bay took the lead in the third on Garcia's two-out home run with Robertson on first base.

It remained 2-1 until the fifth. Consecutive singles by JaCoby Jones, Goodrum and Christin Stewart tied the score. Nicholas Castellanos drew a walk to load the bases before Cabrera golfed a Snell offering over the left field fence.

The Tigers made it 9-2 in the seventh. Lugo drove in Castellanos and pinch runner Gordon Beckham with his triple to left-center. Lugo scored on a passed ball.

Adames cut Detroit's lead to three with his first career grand slam in the eighth off Buck Farmer. Shane Greene pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 19th save.
