Marcus Semien beat Manny Machado's throw to the plate on Khris Davis' ground ball with one out in the eighth inning Wednesday night, breaking a tie and giving the Oakland Athletics a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Oakland, Calif.

A's newcomer Mike Fiers dueled Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw on relatively even terms, setting the stage for Oakland's decisive run against the Los Angeles bullpen. The Athletics emerged with a split in the two-game interleague series.

Semien led off the eighth against the second Dodgers pitcher, right-hander JT Chargois (2-3), with a single, and one out later, took third on Jed Lowrie's single.

Davis then hit a grounder to third baseman Machado, with Semien taking off for the plate. A sliding Semien was called safe, a decision that survived a replay review, to give Oakland the lead.

A's closer Blake Treinen worked around a one-out walk in the ninth for his 29th save, snapping the Dodgers' two-game winning streak.

Jeurys Familia (7-4), who recorded two strikeouts in a scoreless eighth inning, was credited with the win.

Neither starting pitcher got a decision.

Fiers, acquired Monday from Detroit for two players to be named, retired the first 12 batters he faced, striking out eight, before yielding a solo home run to Yasmani Grandal leading off the fifth.

It was Grandal's 20th homer of the season, giving him 20 or more for a third consecutive campaign.

Fiers was pulled one out into the sixth inning and charged with just the one run and four hits. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

Kershaw carried a shutout into the fourth inning but then allowed four hits and two runs. Stephen Piscotty and Ramon Laureano drove in the runs with singles after Davis and Mark Canha had singled to set the stage.

Kershaw pitched six innings, allowing two runs and six hits. He walked no one and struck out just one, his fewest in a start since July 2010.

The Dodgers tied the game in the seventh off A's reliever Lou Trivino on a single by Cody Bellinger, an infield out and Chris Taylor's two-out RBI single.

Semien had two hits for the A's, who completed a 7-1 homestand while improving their interleague record to 12-8.

Bellinger collected two hits for the Dodgers, who lost for the ninth time in their last 10 visits to Oakland dating back to 2001.

The A's out-hit the Dodgers 8-7.
