Albert Almora Jr. hit a two-run double in the top of the 14th inning Saturday night to key a six-run outburst and lift the visiting Chicago Cubs to a 7-1 marathon win over the New York Mets at Citi Field.

The Cubs have won the first three games of the four-game series and six of their last seven. The Mets have lost eight of 10.

The two teams scored once apiece in the sixth before matching zeroes until the 14th, when the Cubs batted around. The teams combined to strike out 39 times, including 24 times by the Cubs -- the most ever recorded by the Mets in a single game.

Willson Contreras jump-started the 14th inning by singling with one out off Buddy Baumann (0-2). Kyle Schwarber followed with a single, and Almora doubled for his first hit in seven plate appearances.

After a pair of walks, Ben Zobrist laced a two-run double, and Javier Baez, pinch hitting for winning pitcher Luke Farrell, crushed a two-run homer.

Farrell (2-2) worked a career-high five innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Baumann was charged with four runs in one-third of an inning.

Jason Heyward had four hits and Anthony Rizzo added three hits, including an RBI single in the sixth.

Michael Conforto homered in the bottom of the sixth for the Mets, his seventh of the season. Luis Guillorme and Amed Rosario each had two of the Mets' seven hits.

The sixth-inning exchange meant neither Cubs starter Mike Montgomery nor Mets starter Jacob deGrom factored into the decision despite impressive work.

Montgomery allowed the one run on two hits and one walk while striking out four over six innings.

DeGrom continued his dominant season -- he leads the NL in ERA at 1.49 -- by allowing the one run on seven hits and two walks while tying a career-high with 13 strikeouts over seven innings.

DeGrom has allowed just three runs over 47 1/3 innings in his last eight starts, a stretch in which he has won twice while the Mets have gone 2-6.
