DETROIT -- Ian Kinsler's game-turning single in the seventh inning traveled just about as far as he did to make a catch of a foul fly in the eighth.

Kinsler's bloop single to right-center field with two outs scored Jose Iglesias to finish a three-run seventh inning that helped the Detroit Tigers snap a four-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Houston Astros on Saturday.

Defensively, Kinsler raced from his shifted defensive position at second base out to where the stands jut out near the right field foul line, then leaned into the seats to catch leadoff hitter Josh Reddick's foul fly for the first out of the eighth and left-hander Matthew Boyd's final out of his winning turn on the mound.

"I had a lot of help," Kinsler said. "No one really reached for it. I ran a long way for that one."

"Obviously, it is a foul ball," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said, "so you've still got a chance to get him even if he doesn't make that play, but it is huge to get any out when you've got the lead.

"He had to cover all that ground, but he's also tracking the railing, the fans and the right fielder."

Francis Martes (3-1) relieved starter Collin McHugh to begin the seventh for Houston, hit Nicholas Castellanos with a pitch and then gave up a single to Victor Martinez to put runners at first and third.

A wild pitch brought Castellanos in to cut Detroit's deficit to 3-2 and Iglesias followed two strikeouts with an RBI double to right-center field to tie the score.

Chris Devenski's first pitch in relief of Martes resulted in Kinsler's bloop RBI single, putting the Tigers on top 4-3 for the first time in the game.

"I knew I was going to see one of three pitches," Kinsler said. "He throws a fastball 30 percent of the time and I knew he was going to be aggressive trying to get strike one. Fortunately, I got enough wood on the ball to bloop it in there."

Martinez got a two-out RBI single to right in the eighth inning to give Detroit an insurance run. Justin Upton walked against reliever Luke Gregerson, stole second and went to third on a flyout to center. One out later, Martinez singled him in.

Boyd (5-5) gave up a two-run homer in the first inning but just one other run in 7 1/3 innings. He didn't walk a batter, struck out five and allowed eight hits.

Shane Greene got the last two outs in the eighth and Justin Wilson picked up his 13th save with a scoreless ninth.

"I liked how much (Boyd) used his curveball to get ahead in the count," Ausmus said, "especially against a fastball-hitting team like that. But he was still able to finish guys off with high fastballs. He did a nice job of mixing up his pitches."

"We didn't do a lot after the fourth," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "He did a good job of mixing his pitches. He's got a really good fastball, a little better fastball than we've seen.

"His breaking ball was pretty good. His changeup got a little better as the game went on. Really after the fourth we didn't really solve him. He did a good job of making adjustments early."

McHugh, making just his second start of the year for Houston, allowed four hits and a run in six innings, throwing 82 pitches. He struck out seven and walked one.

Mikie Mahtook walked with two outs in the fifth and scored the Tigers' first run on a double by Iglesias.

"It was a very good night for McHugh," Hinch said. "I thought he threw the ball very, very well. I was very encouraged by his command, by his breaking balls, by his pace, just being able to control the game right up until the very end. I was very pleased with him."

There was little temptation to run McHugh out for the seventh with his pitch count at 82.

"It's his second start back, he's in the 80s, we took him out in the 70s last time," Hinch said. "Obviously, we're being careful with our starting pitching options. He's coming off two different injuries.

"That wasn't really that big of a deal as much as it was a couple innings we didn't control 90 feet. The (two-out) walk with McHugh, they hit a double and score a run.

"The hit by pitch leading off the seventh (by Martes), a walk leading off the eighth. All contributed to some runs. I wasn't going to send him out for three pitches."

Carlos Beltran singled with one out in the fourth and scored on a triple off the wall in right-center field by Derek Fisher, giving the Astros a 3-0 lead.

Evan Gattis hit a two-run shot for his 11th homer in the first inning to get Houston off to an early lead. Reddick was called out initially on a grounder to lead off the first, but the call was overturned on challenge. Two outs later, Gattis hit the ball over the left-center fence.

NOTES: RF Jim Adduci was recalled from Triple-A Toledo and placed in the second spot in Detroit's batting order. He replaced OF Alex Presley, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a lower right side strain. ... Houston manager A.J. Hinch said RHP Charlie Morton will start Monday and RHP Mike Fiers on Tuesday with LHP Dallas Keuchel possibly getting an extra day before his next start. ... RF Josh Reddick was leading off for the Astros on Saturday, though he prefers batting third. "Reddick's not the manager," Hinch said. "I really don't give a hoot what Reddick wants." The Tigers were starting a left-hander, Matthew Boyd.
